Want a custom portfolio?
#1
There are portfolio websites like carbonmade that compress and resize your uploaded images which results in them losing a ton of quality. I personally want a portfolio that showcases my hard work without having to sacrifice quality for service. You’ll notice a lot of people believe that coming up with a custom solution is very hard and expensive when it really doesn’t have to be. Or they simply just don’t know how.

If you’re just starting out and want a solution that doesn’t compress your images a ton and is tailored the way you like, you can certainly do so. Wordpress is a wonderful software that can do just that, and you can use it for your portfolio and blog at the same time. You’ll also need hosting, any provider that has a shared hosting plan will work when you aren’t expecting an extreme amount of traffic for as little as $10 a month. You can find a host that offers even cheaper plans too.

How do I purchase a domain?

You can purchase and register a domain on websites like Namesilo, GoDaddy, and even Google Domains.

How do I find hosting for my website?

You can purchase a hosting subscription on websites like WebFaction, BlueHost, and GoDaddy. There are several free solutions that I won’t bother listing because you’ll never find a free host that is reliable as a paid subscription.

How do I setup Wordpress and hosting?

You will struggle with this at first. Luckily there are thousands upon thousands of guides and tutorials for this sort of thing so just look around. Wordpress also offers a free plan.

For those of you that are experienced with HTML/CSS.

You can take advantage of GitHub's free service known as Github Pages. They will host all of your static content for free meaning you can create a portfolio with little HTML and CSS knowledge. You can use the free domain they give you (yourname.github.io) or you can purchase your own.

Well I will be a son of a biyahatch.

My only question is, can I upload my own website?

What I mean are the pages?
ex: index.html, home.html, buy.html, ect.

Of course and any webhost that doesn't allow this probably isn't a webhost.

Really useful little post Wage :) Definitely something that designers of any sort should look into when getting themselves out there and marketing their brand!

For those that are looking for a free hosting solution I'd definitely recommend taking advantage of Github Pages, they offer a really generous service. You can host all of your static content for free and even add your own custom domain.

Personally I use keybase to host my website (with the kbfs) because why not. It seems to work pretty well and it's secure too.
